Best Time to visit Lamu, Kenya
Weather, Fishing & Water

Lamu is a timeless island of Swahili charm, a maze of narrow streets, dhow sails on the horizon, and pristine beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean. Thanks to its tropical climate, Lamu is a year-round destination. This guide breaks down every season to help you plan the perfect island escape.

January & February; Hot, Dry and Sunny
January and February mark Lamu’s short dry season, with hot days, sunshine and warm, calm seas. These are two of the best months to visit if you want uninterrupted beach weather. The water visibility is excellent — ideal for snorkelling, diving and dhow sailing — while deep-sea fishing thrives. During this time, the Kaskazi winds (north-easterly trade winds) blow gently across the coast. These are typically light to moderate, cooling the afternoons without disturbing the sea.
March; The Heat Builds
March begins warm and sunny, though by mid-month humidity rises and short showers become more frequent. The Kaskazi winds begin to fade and the weather turns more variable, with calmer, heavier air and the first hints of the long rainy season ahead. Fishing remains good, and the sea is still relatively clear early in the month, but visibility can begin to decline as rainfall increases. This is a good month for balance — fair weather, lighter crowds and lower prices before the wet season fully sets in.
April & May; The Long Rainy Season
April and May bring the long rains, the wettest period of the year in Lamu. Heavy showers and higher humidity dominate, and the sea can become rougher with changing currents. Winds are generally light, though squalls can occur during storms. These months are the quietest time to visit.
June; Lush Landscapes and Calmer Seas
In June, the long rains ease, generally ending by mid-June, and the island bursts into vivid green. The Kusi winds — strong south-easterly trade winds — arrive, marking a new seasonal shift. These winds are fresh and brisk, averaging between 15 and 20 knots (around 28–37 km/h), and can make the sea choppy at times. June is also part of the low season, meaning you’ll enjoy quieter beaches and better value.
July to September; The Long Dry Season
From July through to September, Lamu experiences its long dry season. Days are sunny, humidity is low and rainfall is rare. The stronger Kusi winds continue through much of this period, producing some swell offshore, but the breezes start to weaken in late August/ September. This is a busy period as it's school holidays and great time to be on safari before your beach stay.
October & November; Mild Weather
The Kusi winds die down completely, giving way to light variable breezes and calm mornings. As such, early October is a very good time to travel, often offers crystal-clear water and excellent fishing. The combination of light winds and warm seas makes these months ideal for dhow sailing, paddle-boarding and relaxed beach days. The short rains tend to arrive by late October, carrying in November,
December; Festive Season and Cultural Highlights
December marks the return of the Kaskazi winds, blowing softly from the north-east and ushering in the short dry season once more. These winds are gentle, and the weather is warm, bright and inviting — perfect for sailing and fishing. The sea temperature remains around 28 °C, with good visibility and calm conditions.
December is a busy period, with holidaymakers arriving for Christmas and New Year, creating a lively and colourful atmosphere. Accommodation fills quickly, so book early if you plan to visit during this time.
