Hotel The Mitsui

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is a five-star luxury hotel located directly opposite the UNESCO-listed Nijo Castle, built on the former site of the Mitsui family’s Kyoto residence, which has historical roots spanning over 250 years. The design blends the elegance of traditional Japanese architecture with modern materials and contemporary design sensibilities, offering a tranquil retreat in the heart of Kyoto.
Rooms
The Mitsui Kyoto has 160-odd guest rooms and suites, each designed using natural materials and artisanal details to evoke a refined yet restful atmosphere. Room types include Deluxe, Premier, Garden, Nijo (castle view) and larger suites such as Garden Suite, Executive Suite, Onsen Suite, Nijo Suite, and a Presidential Suite. Many suites feature stone bathtubs, generous space (some over 100 m²), and in certain cases, access to a private onsen (natural spring bath). Dining
Dining at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto emphasizes seasonal Japanese produce, elegant gastronomy, and views of the central garden. The signature restaurant, TOKI, offers innovative “Kyoto French” cuisine under Chef Tetsuya Asano, using local ingredients and unique stocks made with Kyoto water. FORNI serves Italian fare, including wood-oven pizzas and dishes reflecting Kyoto’s micro-seasons, with much of the food preparation visible and linked to traditional cooking techniques. The Garden Bar is a relaxed lounge setting overlooking the garden, perfect for afternoon tea, cocktails or light meals. Breakfast is offered either via a buffet or a traditional Japanese set, served at FORNI with views of the garden.
Activities
Wellness is central at Mitsui. The Thermal Spring Spa draws on an on-site natural spring source, offering communal bathing (“onsen”) spaces, private onsen options, and a range of spa treatments. The spa has been recognised in the Forbes Travel Guide 2025. Guests can also take part in cultural experiences such as tea ceremonies, guided early morning tours of Kyoto’s World Heritage sites like Kiyomizu-dera, and exclusive views or seats during major local festivals like Jidai Matsuri. The hotel also offers seasonal programming (e.g. sakura / cherry blossom-related events) and rooms overlooking the garden designed to evoke calm and connection with nature.
