overview

Hidden among the forested hills of Yamashiro Onsen, just outside Kanazawa, Beniya Mukayu is a sanctuary of meditative calm. Designed by architect Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama, it blends Zen simplicity with warm minimalism — all light woods, open space, and private outdoor baths. It’s not just a stay — it’s an immersion in Japanese philosophy, hospitality, and stillness.

Rooms

Each of the 17 guest rooms at Beniya Mukayu features its own private open-air hot spring bath overlooking the surrounding forest. Interiors are designed with tatami floors, shoji screens, and natural materials, creating a calming atmosphere that blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Large windows allow light to filter gently through the space, emphasizing simplicity and serenity. The design highlights the ryokan’s philosophy of “emptiness filled with meaning,” offering guests room to reflect, rest, and reconnect with nature.

Dining

Dining at Beniya Mukayu centers on exquisite kaiseki cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Hiroaki Kobayashi. Each multi-course meal celebrates the changing seasons, using local ingredients sourced from the mountains and Japan Sea. Dishes are served on beautiful handcrafted ceramics, further connecting the culinary experience to the region’s artistic heritage. Guests can enjoy dinner and breakfast in their rooms or in the ryokan’s elegant dining space, both of which offer peaceful views of the garden.

Activities

The ryokan’s Yakushiyama Spa provides holistic treatments inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and local herbal therapies. Treatments are tailored to each guest, incorporating seasonal ingredients and essential oils to restore balance and energy. Guests can also take part in morning meditation or tea ceremonies hosted by the proprietress, Mrs. Hayashi. The surrounding Yamashiro Onsen area is ideal for exploring hot spring culture, visiting Kutani ceramic workshops, or hiking through peaceful mountain trails.
