Reached by seaplane from Malé, Soneva Fushi occupies the large, naturally lush island of Kunfunadhoo and follows a relaxed ‘No News, No Shoes’ philosophy. Despite the exceptional level of luxury, the atmosphere is deliberately informal, with bicycles replacing golf buggies for many journeys around the island and villas hidden amongst the vegetation. Each villa is looked after by a dedicated Barefoot Guardian, while everything from the architecture to the resort’s recycling centre, organic gardens and conservation programmes reflects Soneva’s longstanding commitment to sustainability.

Rooms

Accommodation ranges from spacious one-bedroom villas to extraordinary multi-bedroom residences designed for larger families and groups. Most are hidden amongst the tropical forest with direct access to the beach and private pools, while a smaller collection of spectacular Water Retreats sit above the lagoon. Even the entry-level villas are exceptionally spacious, with generous indoor and outdoor living areas, private gardens and characterful features such as open-air bathrooms. Larger residences can include private gyms, spas, children’s rooms, water slides and extensive pools.

Dining

Dining is one of Soneva Fushi’s major attractions, with an extensive collection of restaurants and experiences spread across the island. Options range from sophisticated tasting menus and Japanese cuisine to relaxed beachfront dining, plant-based dishes and intimate meals high amongst the treetops. Much of the produce comes from the island’s organic gardens, while visiting Michelin-starred chefs regularly host special residencies. Guests also have complimentary access to the much-loved chocolate, ice cream and cheese rooms, adding to the playful approach to food.

Activity

There is an enormous variety of experiences, from snorkelling and diving to paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing and dolphin cruises. Baa Atoll is particularly renowned for its marine life, with seasonal excursions to Hanifaru Bay offering the possibility of seeing large gatherings of manta rays and, occasionally, whale sharks. Back on the island, guests can enjoy the spa, tennis, cycling, watersports and an impressive observatories, while the exceptional children’s club is almost a destination in itself. Outdoor cinema evenings, private sandbank experiences and conservation activities add further variety.
