Belmond Sanctuary Lodge occupies an exceptional position directly beside the entrance to Machu Picchu, placing guests just minutes from one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites. Surrounded by misty mountains, subtropical gardens and the peaks of the Andes, it offers a peaceful retreat with the rare privilege of staying at the citadel itself.

About
Perched on the mountainside above Aguas Calientes, Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located directly at the entrance to Machu Picchu. Its intimate setting provides an especially convenient base for exploring the ancient Inca citadel, while the lodge’s gardens, native flora and mountain views create a tranquil atmosphere away from the crowds. The property has a long connection with Machu Picchu, having originally accommodated explorers, researchers and other visitors before becoming a Belmond hotel in 1999.
Rooms
The lodge offers 29 rooms and two suites, including Standard Rooms, Standard Patio Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, Deluxe Terrace Rooms and a spacious One-Bedroom Suite. The accommodation is designed to complement its extraordinary setting, with the Deluxe rooms offering mountain, forest or panoramic views, while the One-Bedroom Suite features a private furnished terrace and sweeping mountain vistas.
Dining
Dining focuses on Peruvian flavours and ingredients, with two restaurants and a bar providing different settings throughout the day. Tampu offers more refined Peruvian cuisine with a focus on the surrounding rainforest and regional produce, while Tinkuy provides a more relaxed buffet-style experience. At Tampu Bar, guests can explore a menu centred around pisco, while cooking classes and tasting experiences offer further opportunities to discover Peru’s culinary traditions.
Activity
The defining experience is, naturally, exploring Machu Picchu itself, with the lodge’s location allowing guests to reach the citadel within minutes and arrange guided visits through Belmond. Beyond the ruins, guests can enjoy the lodge’s gardens, Andean-inspired wellness treatments and restorative outdoor experiences, while private guides can help reveal the history, culture and spiritual traditions of the region. The journey itself can also become part of the experience, with the option to arrive aboard Belmond’s Hiram Bingham train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo.
