About

Usawa means ‘balance’ in Swahili, reflecting the camp’s philosophy of combining comfort with a light footprint on the surrounding wilderness. Rather than operating from one permanent location, Wilderness maintains a collection of mobile camp sites across the Serengeti, allowing the experience to adapt to the seasonal movements of wildlife. The camp is deliberately understated, with canvas structures, natural materials and comfortable communal spaces that keep the focus on the landscape. A lounge, dining area and outdoor campfire provide relaxed places to gather between activities, while the small number of guests creates a personalised atmosphere.

Rooms

Accommodation comprises just six spacious en-suite safari tents, including a family tent, providing an intimate experience with a maximum of 12 guests in a standard camp configuration. Each tent features comfortable beds, contemporary safari furnishings, an en-suite bathroom with a shower and flushing toilet, and a private veranda overlooking the surrounding plains. Solar-powered lighting and thoughtfully selected natural materials help minimise the camp’s environmental impact, while the interiors provide a comfortable retreat after long days exploring the Serengeti.

Dining

Dining follows the relaxed rhythm of a traditional mobile safari, with freshly prepared meals served in the communal dining tent or outdoors beneath the stars. Breakfasts and picnic lunches can be arranged around game drives, allowing guests to spend longer exploring when wildlife activity is particularly rewarding. Evenings often begin with sundowners around the campfire before a freshly prepared dinner, with menus combining international dishes and East African influences. The intimate atmosphere encourages guests to share stories of the day’s sightings with fellow travellers and guides.

Activity

Game drives are the main focus, with the camp’s seasonal movements designed to provide excellent access to the Great Migration throughout the year. Depending on the location and time of travel, guests may witness the calving season on the southern plains, vast herds moving through the central and western Serengeti or dramatic river crossings in the north. The Serengeti also supports exceptional resident wildlife, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and large numbers of plains game. Expert guides tailor each safari to the prevailing wildlife conditions, while the camp’s remote locations provide opportunities to experience quieter areas of this remarkable ecosystem.
