Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
Location: Located in the northwest region of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is home to several gorilla families.
Gorilla Trekking: The park offers an incredible trekking experience, with well-maintained trails leading to various gorilla groups. Notable families include the Susa, Group 13, and the Amahoro group.
Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the best times to visit, as the trails are easier to navigate.
Permit Information: A gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person.
Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Location: Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi National Park
Gorilla Trekking: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Popular groups include the Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura families.
Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the best times to visit, as the trails are easier to navigate.
Permit Information: A gorilla trekking permit costs $700 per person.
The Trekking Experience
Upon arrival at the park, you will be briefed on the guidelines for trekking. Groups of up to eight people are assigned to a gorilla family, and experienced guides lead the way. The trek can be exhilarating, with lush landscapes, unique flora, and the chance to encounter other wildlife, such as monkeys and birds. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour observing their behaviours and interactions. This hour allows for incredible photography opportunities and the chance to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
How do Uganda and Rwanda experiences differ
Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda offers the same extraordinary encounter with mountain gorillas, but the experience differs in cost, comfort and setting. Uganda’s treks, mainly in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, are generally more affordable and feel more rugged and adventurous, with denser forest, steeper terrain and longer, less predictable hikes, rewarded by a strong sense of exploration and value. Rwanda’s treks in Volcanoes National Park are typically more expensive but more polished, with easier access from Kigali, shorter transfer times, clearer logistics and often gentler trekking conditions, making the experience feel more streamlined and luxurious overall.
