Captivating Vumbura Plains lies in the far north of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inland delta on Earth. Perched on raised decks in the midst of the melapo – the annually inundated grasslands – the camp almost floats over water, radiant blue and pure enough to drink. Nestled under tree canopies and airily open to nature, Vumbura Plains serves up intimate wildlife encounters on the spectacular floodplains, studded with ilala palms and small islands.
Stretched over 1.8km, Vumbura Plains is made up of two camps, the north and south camp. Each sharing the same view across the concession, from their open-sided lounge area, they are joined by elevated wooden decking with a large 360-degree bar at the centre. It boasts a contemporary balance of wood, glass, and canvas, reflecting the colours of the Delta. Its 14 spacious suites include indoor and outdoor showers, an en-suite bathroom, a private plunge pool, and an outdoor 'sala’ from where you can view the never-ending wildlife parade, for instance;‘mowing’ the grasses nearby; a baby elephant being taught how to use his trunk.A truly Okavango experience – even just watching the sunrise, where sun, Earth, and water meet, with the promise of a new adventure.
There is plentiful food and drink to be enjoyed throughout the day, whether in the dining area, or in the comfort of your own room. Enjoy a well-stocked bar from which you can help yourself to a range of alcoholic and soft drinks. Or make yourself a fresh coffee as you sit and watch the game.
For the early risers and morning game drives, there will be a cooked breakfast buffet available, followed by a substantial brunch menu for those who like. Sweet and savoury snacks are available throughout the day with afternoon tea served ahead of the evening game drive. A magnificent 3-course dinner is then served on the decking as the plains are gently lit by evening starlight.
The annually inundated grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as 'melapo' and offer good seasonal viewing of elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Hippo and crocodile are common in the waterways. Predators include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round.
