Loapi

Loapi (often called Loapi Tented Camp) is a highly exclusive safari retreat comprised of six private tented homes set in the expansive Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in South Africa’s Northern Cape. Each home is positioned in a peaceful valley between the Korannaberg mountains and overlooks the sweeping arid grasslands of the reserve, giving guests an intimate, secluded connection to the wild Kalahari landscape.

About
Designed to reflect the nomadic spirit of true wilderness living, Loapi blends contemporary sustainability with a deep sense of place. Its environmentally sensitive pavilions of canvas, glass, steel and timber are integrated into the terrain so that they harmonise with the surroundings and can even be dismantled if necessary. The name Loapi—meaning “the space below the clouds” in Setswana—captures the broad vistas and sense of freedom guests feel, while a dedicated house manager (homathi), private chef and with private safari vehicle, guide and tracker included with every booking, ensure personalised service and total privacy.
Rooms
Loapi comprises six expansive safari homes, including four one-bedroom and two two-bedroom residences, each designed as its own private camp with no shared guest areas. Inside, cocoon-like bedrooms under canvas connect visitors to the sights and sounds of the Kalahari, while deep shaded decks provide space to relax on daybeds, enjoy wildlife views, take a dip in the plunge pool or gather around the fire pit. Interiors, crafted with natural materials and artful design, balance comfort with openness to the surrounding landscape.
Dining
Dining at Loapi is a bespoke and intimate experience, with all meals prepared by a private chef in each home’s interactive kitchen and tailored to guests’ tastes. Whether it’s enjoying breakfast on your shaded deck with a panoramic view, a sunset sundowner by the fire pit or a private dinner under stars, the culinary experience is flexible, personalised and deeply connected to the natural setting.
Activity
Activities at Loapi embrace the full breadth of the Tswalu Kalahari wilderness. Wildlife-focused game drives explore the reserve’s diverse habitats in pursuit of iconic and rare species such as black-maned Kalahari lions, pangolin, aardwolf and brown hyena, while guided bush walks deepen understanding of the ecosystem. Additional experiences include visits to habituated meerkat clans, horseback safaris, birdwatching, night drives and cultural forays to ancient San rock art sites, as well as sundowners overlooking dramatic plains or stargazing beneath the vast desert sky.
