Old Cataract Hotel

About

Originally built by Thomas Cook to accommodate travellers arriving in Aswan by rail and Nile cruise, the Old Cataract has welcomed royalty, politicians, writers and explorers throughout its long history. Agatha Christie famously stayed here and drew inspiration from the hotel while writing Death on the Nile, while Winston Churchill was another notable guest. Following many years as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, the hotel is now operated by Mandarin Oriental, retaining the historic character that has made it an Aswan landmark for more than a century.

Rooms

Accommodation is centred around the historic Palace, with 35 individually designed rooms and suites combining Egyptian influences with classic European styling. High ceilings, elegant furnishings and marble bathrooms reflect the heritage of the property, while many rooms have private balconies or terraces overlooking the gardens or Nile. The larger suites provide considerably more space, with some of the finest enjoying superb river views and a particularly strong sense of the hotel’s history.

Dining

Dining makes the most of the hotel’s extraordinary setting beside the Nile. Saraya serves a combination of Mediterranean and Levantine cuisine in elegant surroundings, while The Terrace offers a more relaxed setting for lighter dishes and afternoon tea overlooking Elephantine Island. Drinks beside the river at sunset are a particular highlight, when the granite hills and islands surrounding Aswan take on the warm colours of the evening light.

Activity

The Old Cataract is very well positioned for discovering Aswan, with the Nubian Museum, Elephantine Island and many of the city’s attractions within easy reach. Excursions can explore Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and the surrounding Nile, while traditional felucca trips offer a wonderfully relaxed way to experience the river. Back at the hotel, guests can spend time beside the infinity pool overlooking the Nile or simply enjoy the gardens and historic surroundings, making it as much a part of the Aswan experience as a base from which to explore.
