Tengile River Lodge

About

Tengile means ‘tranquil’ in the local Tsonga language, which suits the lodge’s secluded riverside setting. The design is contemporary but carefully integrated into the landscape, with natural materials, earthy colours and extensive glass bringing the surrounding bush into the interiors. The main lodge includes spacious lounge and dining areas, a bar, swimming pool, viewing deck, gym and spa, while the small number of suites creates a highly personalised and peaceful atmosphere between safari activities.

Rooms

Accommodation comprises just nine exceptionally spacious suites, each positioned along the riverbank to maximise privacy and views. The suites feature large bedrooms, elegant bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers and extensive living areas opening onto private decks with their own plunge pools. Floor-to-ceiling glass and natural materials create a strong connection with the surrounding landscape, while two suites can be linked to create a particularly impressive option for families travelling together.

Dining

Dining is flexible and forms an important part of the safari experience, with meals served in a variety of locations rather than being restricted to the main restaurant. Guests might enjoy breakfast in the bush after a morning game drive, lunch overlooking the Sand River or dinner beneath the stars around the boma. Menus combine contemporary international cuisine with South African influences, complemented by a carefully selected wine collection, while private dining can also be arranged for couples and families.

Activity

Morning and afternoon game drives explore the wildlife-rich Sabi Sand, one of Africa’s most celebrated safari areas and particularly renowned for its leopard viewing. Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and wild dog are also regularly encountered, alongside an impressive variety of plains game and birdlife. Experienced guides and trackers can leave the established roads where appropriate, allowing for excellent close-up sightings, while guided bush walks provide a slower perspective on the ecosystem. Wildlife can frequently be watched directly from camp, sometimes without even leaving your suite!
